Materials:

Musical Instruments scavenger hunt handout, Internet Access to the World Wide Web, computer lab, printer, paper, pencils, student and teacher evaluation checklists, copies of short answer worksheet and scoring rubric.

Warm-Up:

View a PowerPoint presentation on instrument families and discuss facts about the various  instruments.

Procedure:

Day One – Send the students on an Internet scavenger hunt for musical instruments. Using the handout, students will be led to Websites ( e.g. www.talentz.com/allegro.hts ) which show examples of instruments in each instrumental family. They will find, read and listen to sounds of instruments. The students will then choose their favorite instruments and print out  information about them. Homework: Read about their chosen instruments and bring print outs back the next time.

Day Two – The instrumental families will be reviewed in class. The students will complete factual worksheets on their chosen instruments and check their answers in class.

Day Three – The students will prepare portfolios in class and present them.

Correctives:

Pair students together based on ability, so that those with strengths in Internet searching can help those who need extra attention. Provide personal attention to those students who need help. The students struggling to identify instruments may use instrument flashcards.

Extensions:

Any students working ahead of schedule may want to compare or contrast instruments in different families or they may want to invent an instrument by drawing it on paper and putting it in a specific family.
