The 2001 Institute July 22-27, 2001 Erie, PA

Journal created by: Chris Fondi and Deb Hilton

Our experiences at the governor's school for the arts began with an amazing assortment of site specific theatre pieces. The students were given some source material and one site on campus. In the space of two weeks they developed their characters and stories. One of the three plays that we observed was titled "The Lady of the Sacrifice". Our experiences continued into other disciplines. One of the highlights was the painting studio where students are encouraged to research historic artists whose style resembles their own. They began in the library gathering art history and art appreciation books to have on hand in order to connect their work to those that came before them. Mr. Gilliam, Painting Instructor

A demonstration of the art of raku compared and constrasted ancient techniques with modern developments. Students learn the history of the development of raku and its place in Japanese culture, PA State Standards 9.2.D and 9.2.G in action. Mr. Twersky, Ceramics Instructor

An exciting end to our morning was witnessing a master class in dance. Following a session of traditional exercises, Manfred Fishbeck, the artistic director of Group Motion, introduced the dancers to a variety of modern dance moves. Dance Studio
