The 2001 Institute July 22-27, 2001 Erie, PA

Community #5

Traditional Arts in Contemporary Pennsylvania

Lead:  Carlos Fernandez        Mentor:  Lynette Giblin

"I sure will miss having

10 people help me

make my lesson plans!"

"I worked very hard this

week, but I know I

will be rewarded by the responses

of my pupils - many times over!"

"I created a 3-day lesson as a final

activity centered on the traditional

art of weaving. Students in the 4th

Grade will access websites to find

examples of traditional and

contemporary weaving to compare

and contrast."

"A picnic on the beach with cloth napkins

and glass plates, a cruise on Lake Erie,

outstanding company, entertaining presenters

and two days of stressful mental exercise;

This sums up the Governor's Institute. I go home

tired and with a muddled mind, but with an

immense feeling of accomplishment."

"After a brief introduction of Greek immigration

to Pennsylvania, students will learn a traditional song

and dance from Greece. The class will learn how the

Greek culture is being kept alive. We will do this

through performance and by video review."
