The Southern Alleghenies Museum Of Art hosted a teleconference on Tibetan Art for the participants of the teachers conference and the Governors School. The conference was an introduction to Tibetan Religious Art, with visual examples, explanations, and time for questions. Being a part of this arts networking experience was good. We were given opportunities to recognize and understand this art form with a community of learners from across the state.

This teleconference was one of the many activities we were involved in during our week at the Governor's Institute for Arts Educators. Our primary objectives were to set student achievement expectations, develop assessment techniques, and utilize technology . This collaboration of arts educators was a beneficial experience. During all sessions there was a firm emphasis on standards, and aesthetics. It is our plan to integrate what wer have learned in our classrooms .

When listening to music that is unfamiliar, I hesitate to express my criticisms. Because I do not understand the Tibetan Culture,my impressions are purely reflections based on my limited frame of reference. Melodically the music is simple, using very few pitches. Often a pitch is sustained for a long time. Formatically the sounds seem to flow freely with no recognizable design, but I believe the monks may have a plan in mind. Like the circular shape of the Mandala the music seems to go round and round, with an improvisational feel. The chant is very focused but gentle.Harmonically the music is very simple, actually with little or no harmonic effect. Rhythmically, the sounds take the shape of the words in the chant. Tempos do vary , but there is little or no recognizable pulse. The instrumental music and dances are of a somewhat different character. All the singers seem equal in importance except for the very low singer who seemes to initiate the sequences. It feels to me like the vibrations of the singers seem to facilitate their concentration, and the repetitious nature affects the aesthetic, too. To me the music is simple ,with little contrast .The chanting was peaceful, but for me unemotional. .
