Inscribed in the clay of
this student's work, which is very hard-edged,
precise and machine-like, are the words:
"Do we shape
nature,or does nature shape us?"
Entertaining this question and
viewing the artwork of the students of the
Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts, gave
me the opportunity to reflect on the question of
aesthetics (the philosophy that focuses on the
nature of beauty, and the nature and value of art,
and the inquiry processes and human responses
associated with these topics.)

THE TIBETAN
CONNECTION
We as educators,
as well as the students, were exposed to quite a
different cultural experience: the art, music and
dance of the Tibetan monks of India.
One professor,
Terry Bowie, presented his painting students with
the idea of using printed fabric as the
underpainting for Buddha themes.
