Touch the consecrated sand to begin your search for the Tibetan aesthetic.

The Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Art Educators convened in the idyllic landscape of North East, PA. We spent July 12 through 17, in residence at Mercyhurst College, addressing student achievement expectations based on national, state and local standards, with a special focus on aesthetics.

Aesthetics is a small word representing a large part of human understanding and appreciation in the arts. Its philosophical base challenges easy definition, but ... Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary tries:Aes•thet•ic n : a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste and with the creation and appreciation of beauty. "A purely Aesthetic response."

A special program with Tibetan monks creating a sand mandala in the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts art gallery , combined with studio visits provided us an ideal research lab to explore or search for the aesthetics.

The gallery was consecrated by the monks in preparation for the creation of the sand mandala. Paintings on textiles by students in the Tibetan tradition were included in this exhibition. (Studentexample)
