The Unexpected

The Unexpected

“I can’t believe I lost that bet.  Now I have to go on a date with a girl I don’t even know.”  Ryan makes his way to his room, frustrated about what just happened.  He takes off his jacket that guarded him from the cold October air.  “This is going to be horrible, she’s not even pretty and we have nothing in common.”  He falls on his bed in disbelief and wonders what will happen.

The phone starts to ring and answers hastily.  It was Jason, his best friend, on the other end.  “That was a pretty awesome football game wasn’t it?” he said kiddingly.  “No, we should have never made that bet.  My reputation is going to be ruined and everyone will make fun of me.” said Ryan.  “Hey, it was your idea.  You said if your team didn’t win, then I could pick your homecoming date.”  In anger, Ryan slams the phone back onto the receiver wishing he never agreed to anything.

Jason reminded him and never let him forget about the promise he made.  For the next week, Ryan tried to figure out when and how he should ask Kim, the girl that Jason picked.  Kim is what some people would call a nerd and antisocial.  She doesn’t have many people that she can call a friend and most people would think she has never even heard of eyeshadow or blush.  Her hair is messy and she almost always wears sweatshirts and jeans.

Ryan and Kim both have chemistry together right after lunch.  That’s when he decided it would be a good time to ask the big question.  “Hey Kim, can I ask you something?” Surprised, she turns her head away and doesn’t know what to think.  Why is he talking to her?  No boy has ever had a conversation with her let alone ask her a question.  After a couple seconds, Kim answers nervously.  “Uhh yeah I guess.  What is it?” “Well I have been thinking, and I was wondering if you would want to go to homecoming with me.  I think you are really pretty and I have been wanting to ask you about it for a long time.”  Ryan sees her smile and feels bad because everything he just said was a lie.  “Sure, I would love that.  I can’t believe you feel that way about me!”  she says excitedly.  “Well it’s true.  I will pick you up on saturday around seven.  I hope you are excited because I know I am.”  he said sarcastically.

Saturday finally comes and Ryan is nervous about how he is going to react with seeing her.  It was a perfect night with no clouds in the sky.  Ryan walks up to her door slowly wanting to run back to his car.  Before he can ring the doorbell, Kim opens the door.  Ryan sees her in a beautiful dress.  Her hair long and flowy, her dress the same.  It was blue with sparkles that brought out her eyes and a necklace that shined in the light.  Wow she cleans up well he thought. Ryan never imagined her looking like this.  With a smile, he takes her hand and begins to think this might not be so bad after all.
