The Rockettes

On November 24, my family and I went downtown to see the Rockettes perform at the Benedum.  It was my second time watching them live, and overall, I loved their performance.  Being a person of little to no coordination, the entire concept of dancing is amazing to me.

One aspect of the show that I found disappointing was the lack of a live orchestra.  When I buy a ticket to attend a show by professional entertainers, I expect for the performers on stage to be accompanied by performers in the musical pit.  Without this aspect of the show, the entire experience feels shallow, because it lacks the sound quality and timbre that live music provides.

Although the music was not live, it still managed to have some effect on the show.  The tempos and style of the soundtrack effectively mirrored the mood and routines of the dancers.  The Rockettes were especially effective in intertwining the music and their dances when it came to their famous kick lines and precision pieces.  Each time a kick line was performed, it occurred at the high point of the song, and especially in their 'March of the Toy Soldiers', the delicate structure of the music were a perfect accompaniment to their precise movements.

Even though the lack of an orchestra was disappointing to me, I would watch the Rockettes perform again.  They met their goal of bringing out the Christmas cheer in my family.  =]
